International music star Tiwa Savage visits Malawi to champion efforts to end violence against women and girls
LILONGWE, Malawi – Acclaimed Nigerian singer, songwriter and actress Tiwa Savage is visiting Malawi with Spotlight Initiative, the United Nations high-impact initiative to end violence against women and girls.
During her visit, Ms. Savage will engage with women, girls, community leaders, the UN system, development partners and organizations working to address gender-based violence. The mission aims to deepen her understanding of the challenges faced by women and girls in Malawi and highlight the transformative impact of Spotlight Initiative-supported interventions across the country.
Widely recognized as one of Africa's most influential artists and a global ambassador for Afrobeats, Tiwa Savage brings her influential voice and international platform to the cause of advancing gender equality and promoting the rights of women and girls. Through meetings, field visits and interactions with communities, she will learn firsthand about the realities of gender-based violence (GBV), efforts to prevent it, and work to support survivors.
Ms. Savage's visit also seeks to raise global awareness of violence against women and girls, one of the world’s most pervasive human rights violations, and amplify the stories of women and girl survivors.
The visit comes at a critical time as Malawi continues efforts to address the root causes of violence against women and girls and strengthen support systems for survivors. Through Spotlight Initiative, the United Nations has worked with the Government of Malawi, civil society, communities and development partners to strengthen laws and policies, improve access to quality essential services, support women's rights organizations, and promote positive social norms that challenge discrimination and violence.
By witnessing these efforts firsthand, Ms. Savage will help shine a global spotlight on the resilience of Malawian women and girls, the work of local communities and institutions, and the collective action needed to achieve a future free from violence.
